My ghost shrimp is popping orangish? Anybody know why? Is it sick or dying?

  1. aging macrobrachium sp. if it’s white colour that might indicate there’s a problem with their molt regulation

  2. I don’t think that’s a ghost shrimp I think it was mislabeled because it looked like a ghost shrimp when it was a baby. Worst case it’s a freshwater prawn and you need to get a new tank or rehome it. Freshwater prawns are incredibly aggressive and will eat your shrimp and plants and could attack your fish. Middle case its an aggressive shrimp that won’t grow big enough to hurt anything in your tank but could stress out your livestock. Best case it’s a less aggressive shrimp. Part of me thinks this looks kind of like a red claw shrimp.

But I’d prepare for the worst just to be safe op you don’t want to endangered any of your animals. You don’t have to isolate it now but keep a close eye on it you might want to try and feed your inverts if you already don’t that can decrease aggression if it does end up being something that’s mean. I don’t know a lot of different inverts so I can’t really guess species with any accuracy. I think the best thing to do would be to start posting on forums and doing some research to see if you can identify what this shrimp/prawn is.

  3. Mine looks like this too. Do you have dark substrate?

  4. Ghost shrimp can turn slight shades of brown depending on the environment. However, given the hints of solid white I can see under the shell, it might have muscular necrosis.
