I’m thinking babies will probably get sucked up into it sadly. You could look at sponge filters, with your bio load will be able to keep up with a handful of shrimp. Or look into a filter that can have a pre filter attached to it. You might be able to DIY a pre filter onto the one you have now, but it is pretty bulky so not entirely sure that would work (or look good).

if the sponge is placed before the impeller it’s fine
